Prime brokerages provide many essential services to hedge funds. These services can help ensure they operate efficiently and generate profits. That’s why hedge fund managers should choose their prime brokers carefully. Prime brokers also clear and settle trades. While a hedge fund traditionally holds accounts at different brokerage firms, it commonly instructs these executing brokers to clear all trades through its designated prime broker. Doing so simplifies reporting and operations for the fund since the prime broker also serves as the custodian for the hedge fund’s assets.

Prime brokers charge different rates for different clients. And each prime broker has its own fees. They also charge different rates depending on the volume of transactions a client does, the number of services a client uses, and so on. (3) Customer.—The term “customer” means, with respect to a covered entity, any individual, partnership, association, joint stock company, trust, or corporation, or authorized representative of such customer, to whom the covered entity provides a product or service.
Morgan provides to hedge fund ABC constitute prime brokerage services. To alleviate some of the burdens, ABC transacts with J.P. Morgan’s prime brokerage unit. The two entities sign a prime brokerage agreement detailing that J.P. Morgan will assume the responsibilities of managing ABC’s cash management, calculating its net asset value (NAV) on a monthly basis, and performing a risk management analysis on its portfolio. For these services, it is agreed that J.P.
The margin terms made available by the prime broker to the hedge fund will determine the maximum leverage (or borrowings) available. Often, funds may find themselves in the position of being offered more margin at a given point in time than they want. Hedge fund managers must familiarise themselves fully with a prime broker’s margin rules as well as how those rules are developed and implemented over time, in order to ensure that unexpected movements in the market do not have unforeseen effects as a fund’s portfolio. Prime brokers offer many benefits for hedge funds and big investors. They provide access to important services.
